?Rampage? weight flop costs him; Bader puts him on his back to roll to victory at UFC 144

Quinton Jackson didn't come to Japan ready to fight and it cost him in what he hoped would be a triumphant return. The former PRIDE legend and UFC light heavyweight champ didn't make weight on Friday. When it came time to show his stamina and athleticism, "Rampage" just didn't have it.

Behind a solid clinch game and wrestling, Ryan Bader pulled what turned out to be a mild upset, via unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three cards.

[ Related: Benson Henderson wins title belt in classic vs. Frankie Edgar ]

Jackson was a minus-250 favorite in the lead up to the fight. When he showed up at the weigh-in looking soft and tipping the scales at 211 pounds, bettors pounded the Bader side. They were right. Jackson explained that his weight miss was due to an injury during training camp that "kept him from doing his roadwork." Jackson did have a noticeable limp after the fight.

[Video: Bader rolls to victory over Rampage Jackson]

The 33-year-old wound up forfeiting 20 percent of his salary, which was likely around $250,000. That money goes straight to Bader.

This was a huge win for the former Arizona State All-American wrestler. Bader (14-2, 7-2 UFC) has been on the cusp of big things, but was dominated in early 2011 by the future division champ Jon Jones and upset later in the year by Tito Ortiz.

Jackson had one big moment in the fight. Known during his PRIDE days for his powerful slams, Jackson turned back the clock and spiked Bader. The second-round slam had Bader land in an awkward position. It looked like he may have injured his right arm at that point, but Bader said he was fine after the fight.

His performance showed it. He scored takedowns (four total) in each round. He didn't land anything too vicious on top but dominated position and made it tough for Jackson to get back to his feet. The numbers backed up the judges' decision with Bader landing 107-32 shots, including 67-7 in ground strikes.

Jackson, a native of Memphis, exploded as an MMA star during his time in Japan between 2001-2006.

A Beginner's Guide To Antique Collecting | Article Ranks

The reasons for collecting antiques can be as varied as the people who collect them. Some people first become interested in collecting as children, collecting anything from baseball cards to dolls, coins, stamps or even insects. Others don?t begin collecting until their adult years. That interest may be prompted by some significant event, being given a family heirloom or from a desire to preserve elements of our past.

But the one thing all these people have in common is that no matter what they have chosen to collect, it?s fun! Enjoying the pieces one has collected can be very satisfying, but it can?t compare to the thrill of the hunt and the fun of finding a treasure.

Collecting can be a great hobby, but there is an advantage to collecting antiques over something like matchbooks or souvenirs. Antiques appreciate in value. By learning to buy, sell and even trade wisely some people have been able to turn a hobby into a successful business. But how can someone move beyond collecting for fun and begin to build a collection that has value? The key to building a collection that has value, especially antiques, is knowledge. Learn everything you can about the antiques you are collecting. Not only will it add to your enjoyment, but when you learn to buy, sell and trade from a position of knowledge you will be able to build a modest collection into one of real value.

When starting a collection, it?s important to do your homework. When you begin shopping for antiques armed with knowledge, you are in a better position to spot a bargain or avoid making a purchase you may regret. Because the world of antiques is so broad, it is advisable to limit your collection to a specific area. No one can be an expert about every type of antique. That will allow you to learn about important manufacturers, recognize rare specimens, and most important for beginners, know how to spot reproductions.

Beginning to learn about antiques can be as simple as making a visit to your local library. There are a multitude of excellent books available about every conceivable category of antiques. However, two sources of information novice collectors may overlook are antique dealers and collectors. People who deal in antiques for profit or for pleasure enjoy talking about them. Antiques are one of their passions. Visiting antique shops and antique shows will not only allow you ask questions and learn from experts but it can be a fun way to spend a day or a weekend.

Once the ?collecting bug? has bitten you, how do you decide what to collect? Simply collect something you love ? something you are interested in. That makes learning about the items you collect all the more enjoyable. As you learn more about these antiques and their value, you will begin to learn how and where to shop for bargains. Being able to buy and sell to make a profit may not be your primary goal for collecting, but it may help you finance your hobby and enable you to increase the value of your collection.

In your hunt for antiques it is also important to buy quality, not quantity. Owning a few truly fine pieces is always preferable to owning many mediocre pieces. That may mean you may have to start small and gradually build your collection, but quality pieces appreciate faster and will build the value of your collection more quickly. When buying antiques you should avoid pieces that are damaged or repaired. They may be cheaper but they won?t appreciate as much or add value to your collection.

When you search for the unique rather than the common, you will find that the more rare the antique the more it appreciates. This is another reason knowledge is so important. With enough skill, you may be able to recognize rare or valuable pieces less knowledgeable collectors might overlook.

Although they can be excellent sources, antique shops and antique shows aren?t the only places where you can find valuable high quality antiques. People have made some great finds at flea markets and yard sales.

You may also find a wide range of antiques at auctions. But remember, if you go to an auction it?s doubly important to know the value of the pieces you?re bidding on. It?s easy to get caught up in the excitement of the auction and end up spending way too much.

Finally, in your search for that special piece you have been searching for don?t forget about internet auction sites like eBay. Thanks to the internet it?s possible to find just about anything.

Whatever you decide to collect for whatever the reason, enjoy the hunt. Bargains and interesting pieces can be found everywhere.

Chilly start to rodeo parade Saturday

The last day of the Rodeo BBQ Cookoff will be "chili!"

Morning lows on Saturday were down to the upper 40s, more than 10 degrees cooler than Friday morning.

A few showers are developing along the coast Saturday morning, because of a shortwave trough in south Texas.

The area of low pressure will track east, likely in the Gulf.

Showers will only move through our coastal counties and should not affect our inland areas.

Temperatures at the start of the Rodeo Parade in Downtown Houston at 10 a.m. will be in the low 50s, so parade-goers should bring a jacket to keep warm. Afternoon highs will top out in the low 60s with mostly cloudy to partly sunny skies with light, northerly winds. Sunday, southeasterly winds return from the Gulf. Temperatures warm up to the mid 60s with mostly cloudy skies.

US tornado chasers prepare for high season

With the month of March looming, United States tornado chasers are already watching the Southeast as a nasty storm brews with the potential to spin off a batch of tornadoes.

But if funnel clouds develop Thursday or Friday as some forecasters believe, they won't be the first. This tornado season got an early and deadly start in late January when two people were killed by separate twisters in Alabama. Preliminary reports showed 95 tornadoes struck last month, compared with 16 in January during a particularly stormy 2011.

The season usually starts in March and then ramps up for the next couple of months, but forecasting these storm seasons is even more imprecise than predicting hurricane seasons. Tornadoes are too small and too short-lived for scientists to make seasonal predictions. They don't develop like blizzards and hurricanes, which are easier to project.

Difficult to forecast
They pop in and pop out. The storms that give them birth may last only a few hours. Hurricanes and blizzards are lumbering beasts that spend days moving across the satellite maps. When a hurricane approaches, coastlines get days warning to evacuate. With a tornado, if the weather service can let people know 20 minutes in advance, it's considered a victory.

"The Joplin (Missouri) tornado (that killed 158 people last May) wasn't violent until just about the time it got to the hospital," said Harold Brooks, a research scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Severe Storms Laboratory, in Norman, Oklahoma. "Even when you're in the field, there are still times when you're surprised by the intensity of the event and how quickly it started."

Story: Joplin tornado came with terrifying speed

If a forecast for a hurricane or blizzard is off by a mile, it's still bad weather. But a mile difference means no damage in a tornado, Brooks said: "It's so much finer in time and space on the tornado, it does make it a harder problem."

It takes a piece of debris only a few seconds to fly around an entire tornado; it takes hours to circle a hurricane. But tornadoes, though smaller, can have stronger winds. Since 1950, there have been 58 tornadoes in the U.S. with winds exceeding 200 mph; six last year alone. Only three hurricanes have made U.S. landfall with winds more than 155 mph.

And forecasters are telling the Southeast and heartland to get ready again.

"It looks like this week we're moving into a slightly more active dynamic pattern," said warning meteorologist Greg Carbin at the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center, also in Norman, Oklahoma.

'Definitely more unpredictable'
The percolating Southeastern storm is proof of exactly how hard meteorologists have it. On Tuesday evening, Carbin said, "We're kind of expecting it to be a fairly significant event" and the storm center's website had a small red swath for potential severe storms with tornadoes.

By Wednesday morning, the storm center's forecast was much less clear. While the storm looks bad with potential for tornadoes, one of the key ingredients ? unstable upper level air ? is not quite behaving as predicted. So that means forecasters have less an idea of when and where the bad weather and potential twisters will hit, said Corey Mead, a meteorologist at the center.

By Wednesday afternoon, the storm prediction center massively expanded its Thursday watch area to include Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, West Virginia and parts of Virginia, the Carolinas and most of Florida.

"A lot of things have to come together at once to have a tornadic storm and the skill at forecasting all those things is near zero," said Howard Bluestein, a professor at the University of Oklahoma. "They are definitely more unpredictable."

All this comes on the heels of one of the worst tornado years in U.S. history. Tornadoes in 2011 started the earliest ever ? New Year's Day ? killing 550 people, injuring 5,400 and causing $10 billion (euro7.56 billion) in damage over the year, the most in U.S. history. The 2011 season had the most tornadoes in a single day and a single month on record.

Video: Twister terror caught on tape (on this page)

But if you ask tornado experts what that means for this year, they'll answer that they just don't know. Later this summer, meteorologists will meet in a special conference to try to figure out how to do that type of longer-term tornado prediction. And the National Weather Service is installing new radar for live forecasting, tracking and distinguishing of tornadoes. Those together mean that maybe in 2020 or so, meteorologists will be able to say watch out this season or relax a bit ? but not just yet, Brooks said.

A new study by Columbia University professor Michael Tippett points out potential factors ? vertical wind shear, updraft and a type of rainfall ? that might help for long-range tornado forecasts.

Another factor is La Nina, the flip side of El Nino. It's a cooling of the central Pacific Ocean. Scientists have noticed a correlation between strong La Ninas and active tornado seasons ? including last year. But it's not so simple or clear-cut, Tippett and others say. The current La Nina is weakening so much it shouldn't be a factor this year, several experts said.

The new radar, called dual polarization, allows meteorologists to see through rain and dark and be sure if high winds are a tornado. In the past, meteorologists had to wait for ground confirmation. This won't help with long-term forecasts but could save lives in real-time because forecasters can be more certain in their warnings, said National Weather Service meteorologist Paul Schlatter.

Adult Education Tips ? Getting A College Degree | Article Torrent

There is a variety of choices for adults who are considering pursuing continuing education when it comes to earning a degree or certificate. They can pursue college degrees through a community college or four-year institution, receive training and certification through vocational or trade programs, or simply expand their knowledge and skills through basic adult education classes. Whatever avenue you choose, it will very much depend on your individual needs and goal.

But if a specific career path is what you are interested in, then playing a huge role in determining what type of school and program you choose is the degree or certification and training you will need for that career. Spend time studying the programs available at the schools in your area. The point of this exercise is to look at the options that are open to you and not just to choose a school. Find out what interests you. Do you think you can work in that field?

You may have been out of school for a long time and if this is the case, then you may want to test waters first with a basic adult education class. Adult education classes can help you brush up on basic skills, such as writing or computer use, as well as help you get back into the swing of being a student. Unlike a class that you would take at a college or institute, the classes are also much more affordable and would often involve less time commitment as well.

If you are unsure what career path you would like to take then you should consider earning a general diploma from a local community college. You may have talents and interests that you had not suspected previously which you may discover while you are working toward that degree. Afterwards, you will be able to apply your new classes without difficulty to your new degree. The general studies diploma will still help you further your professional life even if you do not find a vocation that interests you.

Furthering your education and training whether in your existing field or a new profession is always beneficial. The best option may seem like pursuing a college degree but still, it would be better to check out adult basic education classes and community college programs as well as technical and training schools.

What is the better investment in today?s economy, gold or silver?

Now the purpose of this article isn?t to talk you out of investing in gold as it is a solid investment. Rather, the goal is to educate you on the history of silver, what influences it?s price, and what it?s future looks like so you can decide if investing in silver is better for your portfolio.

Before I attempt to predict the future, let me first discuss the past performance of silver compared to that of gold.

In 1970, the price of gold averaged $35.94/oz. By the end of the decade, its average was $306/oz, or an increase of about 1000%! Not a bad return. In 1970, the price of silver was only $1.63 per ounce. By the end of the decade, it had risen to almost $22 per ounce! This was an increase of around 1400%.

Would you rather invest a smaller amount and receive a higher return? These past results make the future of silver attractive.

Right now, silver prices are hovering in the range of $17 per ounce. Just imagine, silver prices skyrocketing to around $225 per ounce in the next year.

Why use examples from the 1970?s in regards to gold and silver? Many people, including former Fed Chairman Paul Voelker, admit that the current economy is acting like it did in the 1970s, with higher food and energy prices, instability in the stock market, higher unemployment, and a lower performing dollar. Also Voelker, according to Forbes Magazine, recently told the Joint Economic Committee that while the economy obviously does not have the full-blown, double-digit inflation crisis that finally appeared in the 70s, ?there is an underlying tendency to inflation.? Given the similarities between now and the 1970?s, the price of silver may be ready for a sharp increase again.

The second reason why silver may be a better investment than gold in this economy is that silver has many more industrial applications than in the past. And, like gold, silver is in a limited supply. So as demand increases and supply does not, the price of silver will go up!

What are some of the products that use silver? Batteries, flexible and solid plastics, and electronics are traditional uses for silver that keep demand alive for it. But the following are some newer uses for silver that will keep increasing demand:

? Mirrors & Coatings ? Silver can be polished to 95% reflectivity. While mirrors have been around for centuries, silver is being incorporated in different coatings to reduce sun exposure to the eyes with an eyeglass application. This usage is also being applied to glass buildings in order to help keep buildings cool in summertime and thus reduce energy dependence.

? Medical ? It has only recently been discovered as to how silver?s anti-bacterial abilities work. One area of development includes using Nano-silver particles as a delivery mechanism for silver ions, which are being incorporated into many new antibacterial products. For example, silver ions are being incorporated into paints and coatings to inhibit surface germs and fungus.

? Water Purification -Silver ions are now being used in all sorts of water purification processes. Example customers are hospitals, community water systems, pools, and spas.

? Solar Energy ? Silver paste not only increases the efficiency of solar energy collection as electricity, it can also be used in solar farms that use the collection of the sun?s rays as heat to produce steam powered generators.

Finally, collecting silver coins is collecting massive popularity as well. The U.S. Mint sold more Silver Eagle Coins in March and in the first quarter of 2010 than ever before. A total of 9,023,500 American Silver Eagles were purchased in the first quarter of 2010, the highest amount since the coin made its debut in 1986! Many investors are starting to awaken to the benefits of investing in silver.

According to the London Bullion Market Association?s Forecast 2008 report, the silver market looks bullish over the next couple of years. Silver?s price gains can be attributed to solid demand-side investment, and that appetite looks set to continue in the future as the race between the old world and the emerging economies to corner the world?s natural resources intensifies? be it a mine or simply physical metal. Given the economic factors, the historical surge due to these factors, the increase in industrial demand, and the increased popularity in coin collection, silver may be a safe investment for investors to bully their portfolio than other types of assets and investments.

Sun Country Airlines Is A Tale of Courage And Success ...

If you compared Sun Country Airlines to other similar carriers, you would see distinctive qualities that would set it apart. The birth of Sun Country occurred from the circumstances of another airline that could no longer remain in business. They endured the same trials and hardships as other airlines, and they even closed their doors for good in December 2001. Yet, their story was not about to end, and an investment group saw something worth rebuilding. They have suffered during recent years from the depressed global economy, and now in December 2010 they are in the early stages of bankruptcy reorganization. Considering what made this company in the first place, their future is still optimistic as they move forward.

Just about all airlines engage in a great balancing act, and Sun Country Airlines is no different in that regard. Sun Country Airlines officially came into being in 1999 after Braniff collapsed. Price wars are terribly hard on all airlines for obvious reasons. They had lost a little over 60 million dollars by 2000.

The governments grounding of all flights after September 11th 2001 sealed the fate of the airline. They essentially stopped all flights in December of 2001, and that was the end of the company. In July of 2010 they announced their placement as a top 10 domestic airline in Travel & Leisure magazine. This is a big part of the recognition given by Travel & Leisure?s World?s Best Service Award for the year 2010. This means that Sun Country?s hard work is beginning to pay off as a runner for the Travel & Leisure World?s Best Service Award for 2010. This recognition puts Sun Country in the running for the World?s Best Service Award given By Travel & Leisure Magazine. This award is based on the surveys of those who actually fly the various airways. The ranking is includes grades for customer satisfaction in the areas of personal attention and personal service. The pool of eligible airlines included domestic carriers of all sizes. Which of course makes it especially satisfying for Sun Country to have made the list.

In mid-2010, Sun Country Airlines was flying to London and Hawaii from the mainland US. The Boeing 737 ? 800 twin engine airliner was the chosen aircraft. But that is not the first Atlantic ocean crossing using a twin engine airliner. The previous month, in June, Sun Country operated their first Atlantic ocean crossing flight from Minneapolis/St. Paul to London?s Stansted Airport. Sun Country Airlines is of course considered a smaller operator along the lines of a regional. However they do offer some popular destinations to warmer weather. Employees of Braniff airlines were the first to have started Sun Country. Braniff went out of business and a pool of experienced and talented airline professionals conceived and founded Sun Country Airlines. They originally conceived the notion of providing top notch customer experiences.

Cuba this week | The Impartial Latin American News Link

Cuban dissidents testify before Congress and win abuse case against police, AP exposes Alan Gross, and Valentine?s Day causes collapse of the mobile phone network.

Dissident decries human rights situation before US Congress; Police punish abuses

Opposition figure El?as Biscet testified before the US Congress via telephone on 16 February.

Stating, ?The Cuba I live in is a society full of fear,? Biscet called on the United States to make the world aware of the grave human rights situation in Cuba.

Biscet was arrested as part of Cuba?s 2003 ?Black Spring,? and was sentenced to 25 years in prison where he claims he suffered habitual beatings that left him handicapped and disfigured. He was released in March 2011 due to the intervention of the Catholic Church.

Biscet was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by former US President George W. Bush in 2007.

In other news from the opposition, Guillermo Fari?as reported that Cuban police will?punish the policeman who threatened to kill him in November 2011.

The policeman, Interior Ministry Major Miguel Morej? Padr?n was issued a restraining order to keep away from Fari?as, and will pay a 300 peso fine. He will face jail time if he threatens another dissident.

Fari?as will be permitted to attend Morej? Padr?n?s sentencing, which Fari?as says is unprecedented in Cuba. Cuban police are never publicly tried for allegations of abuse, despite accusations of abuse from dissidents. Cuba often counters that their police force is extraordinarily well-trained.

?This is a blow against impunity,? Fari?as commented, and urged other dissidents to make their complaints public.

Alan Gross knew of risks in Cuba, says report

An expos? by Desmond Butler of the Associated Press details Alan Gross? activities in Cuba. Gross was arrested in 2009 for smuggling satellite telephone equipment to Cuba?s small Jewish community as an independent contractor for the US Agency for International Development.

He was sentenced to fifteen years in prison for seeking to ?undermine the integrity and independence? of Cuba.

Though Gross claimed at the time he was a ?trusting fool? who was not fully aware of the risks involved, the report claims otherwise, saying Gross repeatedly told colleagues of the dangers involved, and even admitted ?The detection of satellite signals will be catastrophic.?

The report also offers more in-depth details of his activities.

Valentine?s Day call volume cause collapse of mobile phone system

Finally, the high call and text volume on Valentine?s Day caused Cuba?s mobile phone operator Cubacel to collapse for a few hours on 14 February.

From Tuesday morning until the early afternoon, Cubans were unable to communicate via mobile phone, reports government site Cubadebate.

The collapse comes two weeks after reduced mobile phone rates were introduced on 1 February, which was reported by Pulsam?rica. Authorities believe that may have contributed to the situation.

Papelbon eager to get started with Phillies

Jonathan Papelbon

By FRED GOODALL

updated 10:53 p.m. ET Feb. 18, 2012

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Jonathan Papelbon relishes the challenge of trying to help the Philadelphia Phillies win another World Series.

He is accustomed to lofty expectations after spending seven seasons with the Boston Red Sox and insists a change of scenery and the $50 million, four-year contract he signed this winter shouldn't make his job with his new team any more difficult.

"I like pressure. That what makes me tick, man," the 30-year-old closer said Saturday on the eve of the Phillies' first spring training workout for pitchers and catchers. "I'm excited."

Making the playoffs hasn't been a problem for the Phillies, who have won five consecutive NL East titles and enter 2012 as the team to beat in the division. But ultimately, manager Charlie Manuel and his players know the club will be judged on whether they get back to the World Series ? and win it.

Since winning it all in 2008, Philadelphia has regressed in the postseason ? returning to the World Series but losing to the New York Yankees in 2009, falling short in the NL championship series in 2010 and exiting in the divisional round last year after winning a franchise-record 102 games in the regular season.

Papelbon, who won a World Series with the Red Sox in 2007, said club and fan expectations are similar in Boston and Philadelphia. That's one of the reasons he liked the idea of joining the Phillies and doesn't feel the burden will be on him to get the team over the hump in the playoffs.

"There's not going to be one guy that comes in this clubhouse that's going to make a difference," said Papelbon, a four-time AL All-Star who had 219 saves with the Red Sox.

"I think every year you start fresh and you see what guys you have in your clubhouse and you really just try to get that team camaraderie as good as you can get and get everybody kind of pulling on the same rope in the same direction," he added. "If we're able to do that, we can do some special things. But like I said, no one guy's going to come in here and all of a sudden make it a World Series championship team."

Papelbon replaces Ryan Madson, who converted 32 of 34 save opportunities in 2011 in his first season as Philadelphia's closer. His contract with the Phillies is the largest ever for a reliever.

The right-hander had 31 saves in 2011, but also was on the mound when Boston completed a monumental collapse that allowed Tampa Bay to overcome a nine-game deficit in September to earn the AL wild-card spot on the final night of last season.

The reliever was one strike away from securing a win over Baltimore before yielding two runs in a 4-3 loss. After initially deadpanning that he thinks about that game "every day, all day," Papelbon quickly reversed field and said he's moved on from the disappointment.

He said a conversation he had early in his career with Yankees closer Mariano Riviera taught him how to deal with tough moments such as those.

"I don't think about it at all, man. It's something that when I was a rookie and I made my first All-Star game I had a chance to talk with Mo about what's the biggest thing that's going to make me successful in this game. His first answer was 'short-term memory,'" Papelbon recalled. "You've got to be able to learn from the situation. But I don't sit there and think about it all spring. You go over things, you try to learn from them, but you've got to be able to turn the page."

Papelbon said he will miss the friendships he made in Boston, but is excited about getting to know a new group of teammates in Philadelphia. He likes the idea of facing new hitters, instead of those he's grown accustomed to facing year after year, and is looking forward to the NL style of baseball.

He'll miss all those Yankees-Red Sox battles for supremacy in the AL East, but is eager to get into the NL East rivalries the Phillies have with Atlanta and the New York Mets.

He even could wind up facing his old team this summer when Philadelphia and Boston meet in interleague play.

"It's hard not to look ahead. It's the human characteristic that comes into play," Papelbon said.

"But for me, I'm just looking to find my way in this clubhouse and with this ballclub. Do the best I can do, one day at a time," he added. "I know it sounds cliche. But that's what I have to do to stay focused on my job at hand. ... But I do know when we play the Red Sox."

The Phillies also have added veterans Chad Qualls and Dontrelle Willis to a bullpen that Papelbon says features a good mix and young and older arms.

Although his experience and contract might suggest Papelbon will be the leader of the unit, the closer insisted he doesn't view his arrival that way.

"I don't really look at it as I'm taking over a leadership role. I look at it like I'm bringing my style, my work ethic and the way I compete to a bullpen," Papelbon said.

"I'm not going to sit here and try to tell one guy this is going to work over the other because everybody's different. For me, I'm simply going to go there, do what I do best. If somebody wants to ask me a question or follow suit, I've got no problem with it. But I try to lead by example."

Pampered Pets - The Right Way To Source Medicines For Your Horse

Finding the best medication for horses is a difficult business, taking into consideration the likely side-effects and for racehorses, ensuring that the drugs taken would not affect the horse?s performance in the race. However , the challenge definitely does not end there. Getting the drugs into the horse?s mouth (and making it stay in) is a different matter altogether.

Besides having to maneuver the 1,000-pound body to get a pill inside the horse?s throat, you will have to cope with the chance of having that same pill spewed back at you in a less distinguishable (and practically unusable) form. Naturally, the prospects of this going down depend on expertise at handling horses and in experience at giving discount pet meds.

Seasoned?horsekeepers ? have come up with all sorts of techniques on administering medicine to their horses. These different techniques are?tested and attempted ? but not guaranteed. Giving medicine to a pony is much like coaxing a child (only a much stronger one with a longer mouth). Thus, the approach that works best for one pony would possibly not be effective at all for another or only to a certain degree, like only during the first try.

One of the best (but most liable to fail) approach would be to mix the medication with the horse?s common food. If this works for your horse, then you are pretty lucky. But if mixing the tablets with grain, applesauce or molasses does not do the job, one might revert back to the ancient syringe. Truly paying homage to coping with an uncontrolled preschooler, pumping the fluid medicine into the horse?s mouth and holding it shut until the medicine is swallowed is not a cosy task. It needs strength and patience as the pony will not make it simple.

An alternative to the syringe is something more friendly looking a plastic mustard dispenser. It won't guarantee that all of the liquid medicine would stay within that equine mouth it would get it all in, after all a condiment bottle is more interesting rather than threatening.

Some pony owners also testify that pills melted in strawberry Kool-Aid juice or vanilla yogurt make irresistible concoctions. It appears that just like us, these medicine-repellent creatures have certain indulgences. After we discover what makes them forget their repulsion to medication, it's an easy ride from there.

It is not only the horse?s health that should be considered when giving it medication. One should be careful in handling drugs that may have harmful effects when ingested by humans. Another methodology in pony medicine is to crush the pill into powder and placing it without delay on the horse?s tongue. Airborne particles that might be inhaled while preparing the powder could be damaging. But (phenylbutazone, identical to aspirin), particularly, causes aplastic anemia in humans.

In the final analysis horse medication also involves coaching and discipline. Irrespective of how recalcitrant the horse is, it can ultimately be instructed to receive medicine with very little fuss. Making the drugs look and taste good requires more effort and time but is fulfilling too!

Should You Sue an Automaker for Bad Fuel Economy?

Heather Peters? victory in small claims court could loom large over the automotive industry.

Peters is the Honda Civic Hybrid driver who sued the car company in November 2011, arguing that her Civic not only failed to live up to the advertised EPA fuel-efficiency estimates, but also that her mileage decreased after she volunteered to have her Civic?s software reprogrammed, at Honda?s request, to extend the hybrid?s battery life. In Peters? claim, she stated that Honda "[f]raudulently represented gas mileage and hybrid performance. Also fraudulently induced me to do software update that made things worse."

Honda countered with a stack of testimonials by customers whose Civics are meeting or besting the EPA efficiency numbers, and by arguing that EPA?s numbers are estimates (your mileage may vary). But in February the small claims court commissioner in Los Angeles recently ruled in favor of Peters and awarded her $9867, though Honda is appealing the case.

The Peters case is another public-relations hit for Honda, which is still struggling to recover from the tsunami disaster a year ago and from the flop of its new Civic redesign for 2012. But this ruling, if it stands up, could resound across the car world. Could automakers really be held legally liable for fuel-economy estimates?

Inexact Science

Carmakers make no guarantee of fuel consumption. How could they? Not only are real-world driving conditions far different from the conditions under which new cars are tested, but driving styles vary wildly. So, because mpg is an inexact science, the EPA?s estimates for city, highway, and combined miles per gallon appear both as a single number and also as ranges for both city and highway driving.

In the case of Peters? 2006 Civic Hybrid, the single EPA number was 49 mpg for city and 51 for highway. But the ranges were 41 to 57 mpg city and 43 to 59 mpg highway. Peters and others taking legal action against Honda have claimed that their vehicles didn?t even meet the low end of these ranges much of the time.

However, here?s a further complication: Many auto experts don?t believe that the EPA tests do a good enough job at replicating real-world driving conditions and return overly optimistic mileage estimates (for reasons explained in full here). The EPA responded in 2008 and changed the way it calculates the window-sticker numbers, which is why a 2008 model has a lower EPA rating than an otherwise identical model from previous years?in some cases, the new ratings dropped the fuel economy estimates by 10 percent or more. Consider the Civic Hybrid: It was basically the same car in 2008 as it was in 2006, the year Peters bought hers. But because the EPA changed its methodology, the sticker mpg dropped from 49/51 on an ?06 Civic Hybrid to 40/45 on an ?08, with the combined figure falling from 50 mpg to 42 mpg.

So which set of numbers is more accurate? The EPA had 115 people supply their actual mileage figures from 2006 Civic Hybrids, while 61 people submitted their results from their 2008 Civic Hybrids. In both cases, real-world mileage was actually better than what the revised EPA estimates indicate. We saw the same thing recently when we tested two 40 mpg-rated cars?a new Hyundai Elantra and a Ford Focus?and did better than the latest EPA estimates. While we were suspicious of high-mileage claims, our results show that the new estimates are fairly good predictors of actual fuel efficiency (though your mileage will vary based on where, when, and how your drive). They?re certainly an improvement over the old tests.

But Peters? claim is not simply that her Civic Hybrid didn?t meet EPA numbers; rather, it?s that Honda knew the Civic wouldn?t achieve the original numbers?49 city and 51 highway?but used them anyway in its marketing. She claims that while the EPA certifies the window-sticker numbers, it?s up to automakers to determine which are the most realistic mileage claims to use for advertising. In other words: Carmakers can?t use any numbers that are higher the EPA?s estimates in their ads, but there?s nothing stopping them from using an estimate lower than the EPA?s.

Did Honda really believe or know that its Civic Hybrid wouldn?t live up to its estimates? Peters said yes; Honda denied it. This issue could be the crux of the appeal.

Software Update

The last twist in this tale involves a software update to the Civic Hybrid?s integrated motor-assist software. In 2010, Honda released a technical service bulletin that asked owners to return their cars to their dealerships to reflash their software "to help prevent IMA battery deterioration."

Honda said the issue was that the original factory programming engaged the battery-assist feature and auto idle stop (in which the gas engine shuts off at stops to eliminate engine idling) too often, which would diminish the battery life. In the TSB, Honda wrote that the effects of the reprogramming would include the following: (1) "When at an auto idle stop, the engine restarts sooner"; (2) "Even with up to four bars displayed on the IMA battery level gauge, auto idle stop may not occur"; and (3) "Reserving battery power to ensure that enough power is available to start the engine from a stop and for initial acceleration. This reduces IMA assist as vehicle speed increases."

We asked Chris Martin, a Honda spokesperson, if these changes would reduce fuel efficiency. His answer: "It depends. Some drivers would see an increase in fuel efficiency, but some would see decreases." We had our doubts about that?it would seem that using the battery less would necessarily lead to using the gas engine more, and getting decreased mileage. But Martin responded that it wasn?t that simple?not everyone would be using the battery less, which is why not everyone saw a decrease in fuel efficiency. The update programs the IMA software to work much the way it does Honda?s current hybrids.

To bolster his claim, Martin noted that Honda?s raw data for fuel economy estimates sent to EPA for certifying the Civic Hybrid did not change with the new software reprogramming (while minor variations occurred, the numbers came out the same).

Peters did not respond to PM?s emails about this story.

Legal Logjam?

This case is a strange one for a lot of reasons. For one thing, Peters filed in small claims court, which is informal and expedited, precludes a jury from hearing the case, and has no pretrial evidence discovery process. Perhaps most importantly, neither Honda nor Peters could have lawyers plead their cases on their behalf (Peters, however, is a former practicing lawyer).

However, several several other cases have been brought to trial or are still pending, the biggest of which is another case in California. A San Diego County Superior Court case is pending in a class-action lawsuit on behalf of 45,000 Hybrid Civic owners. Under proposed terms of that settlement, Hybrid Civic owners could receive up to $200 each and $1000 toward a new Honda.

The result of that huge suit, and Honda?s appeal in the Peters case, will go a long way toward sorting out these thorny questions of just who?s responsible for the mpg claims that appear in car ads and on the window stickers of shiny new cars on the dealer?s lot.
